  2. Beautiful quality light! I especially love the last photo. The posing in that shot is perfect! What program do you use for editing, and how do you do such nice skin smoothing? I don't think I ever congratulated you on getting your braces off... Well, congratulations!!

    1. The lighting was perfect! I use Lightroom. It's a great program! There is a skin smoothing tool. However, I do not like to use it too much...as I don't wont my subjects looking fake. I did not even really touch the photos of me. I was only wearing mascara and when you can get such soft natural light, it will sometimes soften skin for you: without editing. I like genuine photographs. I personally do not like when photographers spend more time editing their photos, than just setting up the shot to achieve what they want in the camera. The right kind of lens is also a great thing! Often times it's so obivious when people over edit... especially when they add in things that aren't really there. (like fake light)

    3. Yes, I agree that editing can be (and often is) overdone, and if done incorrectly it can make subjects look fake. However, I also believe editing is an invaluable tool in creating a photograph. Ansel Adams was known for spending hours upon hours pouring over his prints in the darkroom, essentially editing them while perfecting the art of dodging and burning, editing concepts we still use in digital photography.

My experience working in the darkroom convinced me of the value of editing. A negative, no matter how well exposed, does not automatically develop into a balanced image without adjustments by the developer. Many tonal choices are made in development, and there are techniques and tools to be utilized in creating a perfect print. Digital photo editing is the modern photographer's tool, just as the darkroom was for the film photographer. But just like any other artistic tool, one must learn how to use it. Proper editing is a difficult skill that takes refinement.

As far as adding or removing things goes, great painters would edit the visages of their subjects for various reasons, and they would add or remove other elements to or from their paintings as well. Likewise, I don't think it's inappropriate for a photographer to add or remove elements in a photo, as long as it is done well and makes a valuable contribution to the photo.

I hope you don't mind me sharing my opinion about this! I know it is kind of long and sounds matter-of-factual, but really I just wanted to share with you another perspective! I completely understand wanting to see genuineness in photos. :)

I am surprised you didn't do much skin smoothing to these photos! Your skin looks flawless. You are very lucky!

    4. I'm always open to other perspectives. I absolutely agree with everything you said. Especially about, how proper editing takes refinement. Editing is most certainly an invaluable tool. I truly admire your knowledge of photographic history! :) Working in a dark room seems very exciting. An opportunity I would love.

Thank you. I am very blessed with good genetics, as far as skin goes! :)

    6. Working in the darkroom is a great experience. There's an opportunity coming up at the KIA! They are having a hands-on event next Saturday evening, where they will have an activity working in the darkroom and another activity doing portraiture. There will be lots of other activities too that aren't photography-related such as pottery, screenprinting, indigo dyeing, painting, etc. The event is free, but some activities charge a fee for the supplies. I am definitely going, and I believe Hannah is too!
