OUR GALAXY
The Milky Way is just one of the billions of galaxies in the Universe. It is a vast collection of more than 200 billion stars. Our Sun is located about two-thirds the way out from the core. The stars visible in our sky would
occupy an area about the size of a quarter in this picture. On a clear, dark night we can see a band of light that stretches across the sky. This band of light is a neighboring spiral arm. The ancient Greeks compared it to spilt milk. The word "galaxy" is derived from the Greek word "gala" which means milk, thus the name, the Milky Way galaxy. |
